Reinvention.

I think I've finally made the decision to go pro with my flying.  Having bounced from place to place since I was small, the yearning to go and explore this world is greater than it ever was.  Asia to America, to the South Pacific and back again and again having worked a variety of different jobs I'm set on living up to my passion.  This is no easy feat as now I have a solid 3 months, 8 hours a day, 7 days a week of intense training ahead of me.  Once again it's time to hit the books.  Hello Trenton Mercer!

And I'm back again...

Fast forward eight months.  Working for that "independent marketing firm" which was really a snazzy way of saying "door to door cold calling for insert vendor company here..."  What I thought was really going to be a good use of my time turned out to be 3 months of wandering around suburban New Jersey in a suit and tie trying to look important while begging for people to ditch they're current cable provider for Verizon's FiOS.  Long story short a complete waste of time, money, gasoline, nice shirts and ties for 66 hours a week 6 days a week to get yelled at about how people don't want to be bothered at their doorstep.  But when I quit they said that they would give me a good reference.  The umbrella firm and marketing firms real names will not be disclosed to protect the innocent and the stupid.

Moving right along, March rolled around and I got a two part time jobs at a neat little dive shop in central New Jersey.  Part time instructing and part time servicing gear with a little bit of sales.  Not bad but still on the look out for something more lucrative.  In the mean time I've learned how companies market what is essentially the same shit to they're potential customers year in and year out only making minor changes to cosmetics of the products and touting them as "New and Improved!"  What products are a maintenance nightmare versus what products are a joy to work on and breath nice while actually diving.

I spend my alternate weekends teaching new divers at a place called Dutch Springs in Pennsylvania.  Used to be a quarry, now it's filled in with water and has all sorts of attractions for divers to see from 25ft to over 100ft deep.  Wrecked vehicles, aircraft, aquatic life and the like.  It's huge and has camping areas along with a full emergency medical team.  I understand they also have other fun things for non-divers such as rock climbing and various water sports.  All located near the town of Bethlehem.

Other than teaching, I have been logging some flight time with my old flying friend Jeff.  He bought a Cessna back in October of twenty-eleven.  A little two seat C-152 and we've been making tracks in the sky all over the tri-state area.  The last time I totaled up my logbook the hours added up to approximately 150 hours.  Not bad since I first strapped an air frame on my back back in the summer of '08.

Next up: using the GoPro camera mounted on the nose of a surfboard down at the Jersey Shore.  These little cameras are proving to be very versatile for me.  I haven't used my Canon SLR in almost a year now.  Basically just the iphone and GoPro.

Enjoy your summers.
