Woke up this morning and went over to Bai's place to hang out. This is my last day in Vestal, NY. Bai gave me a very tasty slice of gluten-free soy cheese and spinach pizza. It was really good! Then we lounged around reading on the new couch that is a little tall but comfy. Eventually Bai got out her netflicks and we watched two interesting and surrealistic films.
La Jette:
A French Sci-fi film from the 60s that is all shot with monochrome still photographs and no dialog except for naration and some audio of whispering in German. The film was about WWIII in Paris and how the survivors have to use time travel to send test subjects (prisoners of war) to the past and the future to get people of another time to bring them supplies. Coicidentally I watched this film for a photography course that I took at HWS when I was a sophomore which was to give us an example of how to make a photo story.

Sans Soleil:
A documentery mostly about Japan in the early 80s but has other footage from around the world: Africa, France, Iceland. The film was primarily about people and their traditions and societies and memories. If anything this film to me defines geography and was able to make so many connections between my life in Japan as well as Asia. Not only did the movie bring memories of Tokyo but it brought back so many good memories of Bailey and I from our little vacation to Japan in the summer of '08. Nara, Tokyo, Harajuku, Hatchiko the dog in Shibuya, and the shear brilliance of Japan and Japanese culture. Not to mention lots of cats and owls. What really gets me is how similar Tokyo looked in the 80s compared to how it looks today.

After the watching the two films. We jumped in the hot tub for a bit. I'm really going to miss the hot tub. We then decided to head out for dinner at Kampai, the local Japanese restaurant with hibatchi (tepanyaki) grill. I went for steak and shrimp, Bai had sashimi. All very entertaining as we watched the chef toss eggs, cooking utensils, shrimp, and make a flamming volcano out of an onion.
After Kampai, we were off on another short after dinner adventure to a fancy little place called Tom's that sells very eclectic and neat stuff. Then next door to the Cyber Cafe for lates and a game of chess. She beat me. I tried to win with just the king and forgot about moving the remainder of my pieces. Oh well. Back to her place all whilst listening to skeptic's guide to the universe podcast in the VW Bug and then again in her room. There was something about the science of utilizing high altitude jet streams with thethered airborne wind turbines to generate electricity efficiently and cheaply. Only problem is that the jet streams are 95% reliable. So what to do about the 5% of the time that they aren't. Not to mention that these would be tethered up to 30,000ft. Could be a hazard to air navigation. Nice idea though and I think if the logistics can be worked out it's worth a try.
Caught a little bit of the Dark Night with Bai's brother Austin and their dog Cooper. Had some tea: maple and honey, and strawbery which Bai had bought at Tom's. Some gluten free crackers and chedder to go with the tea. Waited a while until her parents came home from touring the Finger Lakes Wine country. Then Bai decided to try the wine I had got her for her b-day. Hickory Hollow's Red Hoot, Finger Lakes red table wine.
All in all today was the day that made my year.....
